All trialling organizations and those who may be looking to run trials in the future. It is also relevant to regulators, insurers, legal organizations and government (i.e. road authorities, local authorities, vehicle agencies).

Chris has over 7 years of safety and risk management experience in the road safety, workplace transport and transport fields. Chris has also been heavily involved in automated vehicle research, tests and trials since 2015 when he supported the development of the safety case and risk management for the GATEway project – the first project of its kind to run a public automated shuttle trial in the UK. Since then, Chris has led the safety case development for the StreetWise and Smart Mobility Living Lab: London Shared Research Programme projects, he has supported the independent review of the safety case for the DRIVEN project and carried out automated vehicle research overseas for the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority. Chris is also actively contributing to UK CAV industry best practice through working with Zenzic to develop up-to-date safety case framework guidance for safety case creators and reviewers and BSI to co-author PAS 1884:2021 Safety operators in automated vehicle testing and trialling.

Tony Pipe received his BSc (Hons.) degree in Electronic Engineering from Warwick in 1979 and, after an eight-year period in industry, returned to academia and received his PhD in Robotics from the University of the West of England (UWE) in 1997. Since 2010 he has been a Professor of Robotics and Autonomous Systems at UWE. He was a founding member of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), and was one of its Deputy Directors from its inception in 2006 until 2020. His research interests focus on safe and correct operation, normally in close-proximity to human beings. He has co-authored over 200 international refereed publications, supervised 35 PhDs, and created a BRL income of >£12M since 2013. He has acted as BRL-UWE PI on the EPSRC grant ‘Trustworthy Robotic Assistants’, the Programme/Hub grants ‘Robotics for Nuclear Environments’ and ‘National Centre for Nuclear Robotics’, and the Centre for Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. Prof. Pipe has been heavily involved with Connected Autonomous Vehicle research and development since 2015 via the Innovate UK/CCAV funded projects VENTURER, FLOURISH, MultiCAV, CAPRI, ROBOPILOT and CAV-Forth. These projects gradually changed emphasis from the technology itself and its acceptance by users, to formal testing and assessment of the safety and correctness of that technology, with a focus on the role of simulation in this process. He has acted in various contributory roles for CAV related Publicly Available Specification (PAS) activities and, during 2020 and 2021, he acted as a technical author for PAS1884, a guide to safety operators in automated vehicle testing and trialling.

Nick Fleming is Head of Transport and Mobility Standards at BSI and programme lead on the CAV standards programme supported by UK government (CCAV). Nick has over 10 years’ experience in standardization working across emerging technologies and with the automotive and transport industry to develop both national and international standards that support adoption of new technologies, promote innovation, safety, security and consumer protection.
