Formalised natural language description of scenarios for automated driving systems - Specification

BSI Flex 1889 v2.0 sets out requirements for a structured natural language format for test scenario definition of an automated driving system (ADS) Level 3 and higher. This latest version comes packed with updates and learnings that stem from real-life application of the first iteration. New use cases have been added to help with understanding and implementing the standard.

The standard builds a common language for defining and writing test scenarios. It will facilitate communication and efficient exchange within and across organizations and help manufacturers and developers of automated vehicles to assemble sets of evidence that will improve confidence in the safety of resulting products.

Furthermore, it will support the type-approval process for ALKS and also the deployment of L3+ vehicles on public roads.

The specification is intended to be used by organizations providing test/audit services of the systems and processes related to the assurance of an ADS and automated vehicle. It will be useful to manufacturers, developers of Level 3 and higher ADS, suppliers of components and subcomponents, simulators and anyone involved in scenario-based testing.

Users of this document may also include regulators, development engineers, test engineers, scenario editors, scenario database maintainers, and requirement engineers.
