Liverpool F.C. is the first premier league football club to achieve certification to the sustainable events standard by BSI

    1 February 2023

Liverpool FC’s Sustainability Management System was audited by BSI, the business improvement and standards company, and achieved certification against ISO 20121. Certification to ISO 20121 confirms an organizations’ sustainability commitment. The scheme demonstrates that LFC plans, manages, and delivers with consideration for environmental, social, and economic impacts.

LFC’s integrated approach to the implementation of its sustainability management system, considers not only match-day activities but is the operational framework that underpins the delivery of the Club’s sustainability strategy – The Red Way. In late 2021, sustainability experts at BSI conducted audits at LFC to independently assess activities, products, and services to ensure they  met the requirements of the sustainability standard. This included sustainability measures across site facilities and supply chains.

Hannah Simpkins, VP of Club Operations at Liverpool F.C. said “We are proud to achieve the sustainable event management certification. It is an amazing honour for the club and recognition for The Red Way strategy. This standard provides us with credibility in the approach we’re taking towards sustainability in sport.

“It’s taken an incredible amount of work and effort from the LFC team to get this certification from BSI in place.

“We are very aware of the responsibility we hold as a global football club to help inspire and encourage positive behaviour change. With hundreds of millions of supporters around the world know we are in a strong position to help influence sustainable decisions in their day-to-day lives which is why its hugely important to us.”

Martin Townsend, Director for BSI Centre of Excellence for Sustainability at BSI, said: “Huge congratulations to Liverpool F.C. for being announced as the first premier league football club to have achieved certification to the standard by BSI. There is so much passion and inspiration that football provides to us all, particularly the young. However, the beautiful game has the opportunity to be not only inspirational on the pitch but sustainable in the way it is delivered.

“I look forward to seeing other clubs rise to the challenge. As the football industry moves towards a more ethical and sustainable approach it will be able to achieve the same outcomes with minimal negative impacts on the environment, supporting communities and the local economy – maximising the positive impacts and leaving a legacy to be proud of. At BSI, we are proud to provide support in this area and will continue to work alongside industry and society to accelerate the adoption of sustainable measures.”
