India’s healthcare sector is successfully adopting this new global standard to improve quality, consistency, and access across a fragmented system.
“Unlike traditional compliance models, ISO 7101 focuses on optimizing performance and accelerating impactful patient and organizational outcomes.”
Despite rapid growth, the healthcare sector in India faces some entrenched challenges, such as inconsistent standards and poor staff retention. There is growing recognition of the need for a more integrated, people-centered approach to quality.
BSI, in collaboration with the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO), set out to trial ISO 7101 by implementing it in a small number of healthcare organizations across India. The challenge for this impact pilot program was to determine the opportunities and value additions of the standard in strengthening hospitals’ quality management systems.
Among the organizations to take part in the pilot were the 500-bed Dr Mehta’s Hospitals, Chennai, and the 110-bed Annai Velankanni Hospital, Tirunelveli, in Tamil Nadu.
The solution lay in adopting ISO 7101, the first consensus-based global standard designed to improve patients' experience by embedding a culture of quality across a healthcare organization.
Similar in principle to the iconic ISO 9001 quality standard, ISO 7101’s key difference for the two hospitals was that it addressed their specific service delivery challenges. It gave them a systematic approach, enabling delivery of high-quality, sustainable, safe healthcare services. BSI certification to ISO 7101 also requires continual improvement.
ISO 7101 is already helping India's pioneering pilot hospitals to improve their healthcare management processes, including:
“We’re happy hospitals are working with BSI to achieve ISO 7101 certification, which demonstrates their commitment to excellent healthcare delivery.”
By leveraging BSI’s world-class pilot certification program for ISO 7101, Dr Mehta’s Hospitals and Annai Velankanni Hospital are improving patient care and clinical outcomes, ultimately supporting a globally competitive healthcare industry in India.
