BSI is designated by the Director General of Health to function as an Auditing Agency according to section 32 and 33 of the Health and Disability Services Safety Act 2001 (the Act) for all services under the Act. The standards audited under the Act include: NZS 8134:2021 Ngā paerewa Health and Disability Services Standard.

Designation covers the following types of services:
(i) Rest Home Care;
(ii) Hospital Care including: Geriatric services, Medical services, Surgical services, Maternity services, Mental health services, Children’s health services;
(iii) Residential Disability Care including services for people with: Intellectual disabilities, Physical disabilities, Psychiatric support need, Sensory disabilities.

With over 20 years of experience in assessing the Allied Health Services Sector Standard, our skilled auditors (physiotherapists/podiatrists) ensure your organization meets the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) Requirements. Although accreditation to standards is no longer mandatory for the allied health sector from November 2024, ACC still requires certification for certain contracts. If certification is needed, you must comply with the ACC Requirements for Physiotherapy, Hand Therapy, and Podiatry Services.

As a Designated Auditing Agency, BSI is approved by Southern Cross Health Society to audit and certify their affiliated providers to either the NZS 8164:2005 Day Stay Surgery and Procedures Sector Standard or the NZS 8165:2005 Rooms/Office-Based Surgery and Procedures Sector Standard. If you hold contracts with insurers like Southern Cross for specific procedures, certification to the relevant standards is required. The applicable standard depends on the procedures you perform, and we are here to help you make the right decision.

Māori health and disability service providers cater to the diverse needs of their communities, offering Kaupapa Māori services such as whanau ora, personal health, home support, mental health, alcohol and drug support, disability support, advocacy, and more. BSI is privileged to collaborate with Māori services, providing auditing services to support their kaupapa and achieve certification with recognized health sector standards. Our audit teams working with Māori providers include a cultural auditor, ensuring cultural expertise and background are part of the team. You have the opportunity to approve the audit team, including the confirmation of cultural background and expertise.

The Urgent Care Standard (UCS) aligns with both Cornerstone and NZS 8134, setting quality requirements for the provision of accident and medical clinical services as defined by the Royal College of Urgent Care. These primary care services are episodic and operate on a no-appointments basis.

BSI is approved by the Royal College of Urgent Care (RNZCUC) as a UCS auditing and certification agency and meets ACC accreditation requirements for this process. Ensure the quality of your primary medical care by contacting us to discuss your needs.

Home and community support services (HCSS) providers that hold a contract with the DSS (MoH), a Health NZ - Te Whatu Ora, and/or ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) must be certified against 'NZS8134:2021 Ngā Paerewa Health and Disability Services'. If you provide home support services or a new start up provider, we would be happy to talk through the process with you.

BSI is authorized by the Retirement Villages Association (RVA) to conduct RVA Accreditation Audits for their members in accordance with the industry’s Code of Practice. The Retirement Villages Code of Practice 2008 enhances consumer protection for residents and prospective residents of retirement villages, in line with the Retirement Villages Act 2003. It outlines the rights and obligations of both residents and operators.

The RVA is a voluntary association of developers, operators, and managers of retirement villages, dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for village residents. RVA members undergo independent audits every three years to ensure compliance with the Code of Practice.

BSI Group NZ is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Healthcare External Evaluation Association (ISQua EEA) to issue certification (accreditation) against the range of New Zealand approved standards. BSI can independently certify your service to approved standards. Other health sectors we audit in include (but not limited to) Ambulance, community-based Mental Health, Disability, Primary Health, Private Hospitals, Responsible Authorities, and Public Health.
