Differences between BS 99001 and ISO 9001
- ISO 9001 is a pre-requisite for BS 99001
- Includes sector-specific language and project-related requirements
- Increased focus on documented information
.
BS 99001:2022 is a quality management system standard that builds on ISO 9001 but is specifically developed for the built environment. It includes expanded requirements to those in ISO 9001, which are key to the sector (e.g., competence, design quality, temporary works, inspection and test plans, and documented information).
The standard was published in July 2022 and positions quality alongside sector-wide improvements in the fundamental sustainability, safety, and durability of built assets and supports the industry in implementing requirements to the new Building Safety Act, which became law in April 2022.
BS 99001 acknowledges multi-organizational, project-based ways of working. It clarifies the interpretation of QMS requirements in the context of the sector.
