The work on artificial intelligence (AI) standards is primarily internationally focused. Our national committee ART/1 brings together a diverse range of stakeholders to feed UK views into the international work programme which is developed through ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC 42 Artificial Intelligence, the international AI Committee and CEN-CENELEC/JTC 21 Artificial Intelligence.
The current programme carried out under ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC 42 is a mix of foundational standards, technical standards and business standards. Of main interest to the market are the standards in development around risk, safety, bias, governance and the recently approved management system.
At European level the UK is active in CEN-CENELEC/JTC 21 Artificial Intelligence which was launched earlier this year with the support of the European Commission. The new Committee evolved from a focus group by the same title that produced a European roadmap for AI standards. The project highlights artificial intelligence topics of high importance in a European context, maps out potential gaps in the current standards landscape and looks to recommend European strategies which may include original harmonised EN standards.
